Who is this qualification for?

The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing is aimed at anybody over age 16  who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed junior hairdresser/stylist.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.

What does this qualification cover?

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior hairdresser/stylist.

What could this qualification lead to?

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Hairdresser (SRGH) with The Hair Council. As a junior hairdresser/stylist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
  • commercial hairdressing salon
  • independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • product manufacturing and training television, film, theatre and media
  • armed services
  • HM prison service
  • cruise liners
  • hospitals/care homes

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a Level 3 qualification in hairdressing

Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing

Who is this qualification for?

The VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing is a technical level qualification that provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as an employed and/or self-employed hairdresser able to work on hair combining a variety of different technical skills. This qualification is ideal for those who hold a hairdressing or barbering qualification and work in a salon.

Why is this qualification the most suitable?

This qualification covers specific skills necessary to become a higher skilled stylist. The qualification builds on existing knowledge and understanding of hairdressing and develops more detailed and enhanced technical skills necessary for employment. Your skills and techniques will be assessed in a real working environment.

What could this qualification lead to?

When you complete this qualification you will be are eligible to become a State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) with The Hairdressing Council.

Level 2 Certificate in Barbering

Who is this qualification for?

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Barbering is a vocational qualification that has been designed to develop a limited number of barbering skills to a high level of occupational ability and will prepare you to enter the men’s hairdressing sector as a barber. This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 years and over, entry onto this qualification can be via previous achievement of a Level 2 qualification in hairdressing and/or a successful skills test and interview.
This qualification includes the units to prepare you to work effectively as a junior barber/hairdresser, including: client consultation for hair services, cutting men’s hair, cutting facial hair and following health and safety in the salon.
This qualification will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills to enable you to advise and consult with men on the type of hair cut and facial hair shaping the way they want, but just as importantly what is suitable for them. You will also learn how to work in a safe manner throughout the service protecting both yourself and your clients.

What could this qualification lead to?

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a junior barber/hairdresser. On completion of this qualification you will widen your career opportunities from working as a hairdresser to be able to offer barbering services through a variety of contexts, including:
  • Working in a barber/hair salon
  • Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings

Will a CERT Level 2 Barbering allow me to get insurance?

CERT level 2 Barbering are the national recognised standard the hairdressers/barbers both these qualification will able you to get insurance.

What can I expect to earn as qualified hairdresser/ Barber?

There is lots of different ways in which hairdressers/barbers get paid. When hairdressers/barber is first qualified they usually get minimum wage, depending on what arrangements you have below is the list of ways you may get paid.
  • Some hairdressers/Barbers work on commission only as self-employed
  • Salary employed
  • Work employed on a basic wage plus commission

Will I be working on live models?

Yes Nicky Oliver believes the only way you will learn to be a great hairdresser or barber is to work on live models and many students on their first day will be cutting hair.

How many models will I do day?

On average throughout your NVQ level 2 you will 2 model a day
NVQ level 3 we’ll expect you to complete 3 to 5 models a day
Certificate level 2 barbering on average 2 models day

Who finds the models?

We have a regular clientele database of people. Your friends or family might want to be a model in the school there is a small charge depending on what service they have.

What if I do someone hair wrong?

You are fully supervised at all times by one of our teachers. Every client is fully checked over before they leave so you don’t have to worry.

Will I be working on hair blocks?

Yes you will be working  hair blocks e.g. Learning the technique of the foil highlights, on blocks as this involves using chemicals, so we teach this before we put you onto a live client.  This will give you the confidence when you actually do the a highlight foils on a live model.
We also teach you some long hair techniques on a hair block.

Is there any books I need to buy?

You need to buy the relevant qualification book and this will help you understand the theory. We call them at Nicky Oliver the “hair bibles”.

Do I need to a hairdressing kit?

Yes you can purchase a full kit from us that is a professional hairdressing Kit and will still serve you when you’re qualified.

Do I have to pay extra for my exams?

No you do not have to pay any extra at all for your exams.

Do I have to wear uniform when I'm in the academy?

Yes you do need to wear uniform, anything black and wear flat sensible shoes that are not open at the toes.

How can I pay for the course?

You can pay by 3 ways:
  1. Pay in full
  2. You can get finance for up to 5 years subject to status
  3. Pay A 1/3 up front then spread the rest of the payment over the period of the course

Are there any entry requirements?

Some courses will require a certain level of experience. There are no prerequisites for any of the Beginners NVQ 2/3 Diploma courses, except for a willing to learn, passion, drive and commitment (and being aged 16 and over).

After I finish the Beginners Diploma Course am I guaranteed a job?

We cannot guarantee you a position upon graduation.  if you apply yourself throughout the course, listen to the teachers’ advice while at the Academy, you will leave with the best chance of finding work afterwards.

What should I bring with me?

NVQ Beginners Diploma course, a full kit of equipment will be given to you free of charge.  For all other courses, you will need to bring scissors, combs, brushes hairdryer straightening irons sectioning clips, pen note book.

How much is the deposit?

  • NVQ Beginners Diploma 36 weeks you put as little as 10%
  • All over course 50% at time of booking
  • Full payment in 1 month before start date
  • Speak to account dept who will give you full details

Are there any student loans available?
